The national leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some supporters defied a heavy downpour to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the June 4 uprising.
They converged at the party's National Headquarters in spite of the heavy rains Friday, June 4.
The the cyclonic rain, which began about five minutes after the start of the event and lasted a little over 15 minutes, did not deter the Party’s Chairman; Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo and General Secretary; Johnson Aseidu Nketia and the Klottey Korle MP and daughter of late President Rawlings; Dr Zenator Rawlings, among other dignitaries, from marking the occasion.
The speakers who took their turn to address the party faithfuls observed that the downpour signifies the presence of Rawlings in their midst.
“We are marking this year’s anniversary, under the rain and the leader of the revolution, the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd.) will always remain in the rain and celebrate with us. He is in the rain; who will go and take shelter?
“We are even fortunate that there is some shelter here; otherwise, in paying tribute to his memory, we should be standing in the rain and repeating what he used to do whilst alive,” Mr Ofosu-Ampofo told the celebrants.
On his part, Mr Asiedu Nketia asked supporters of the party to refrain from activities that will divide the rank and file of the party.
According to him, actions that undermine the unity and strength of the party will be a great disservice to the legacy of late former President Rawlings.
Meanwhile, the daughter of the late statesman, Ms Rawlings, cautioned against activities that could create a fertile ground for the recurrence of an uprising.
In her view, successive governments after her father have undermined the principles of probity and accountability, which led to the June 4 revolution.
