Lawyers for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are asking two high courts to dismiss suits challenging their respective upcoming elections.

The NDC is facing a suit from youth leader and President at the Akrokerri School of Education, Linus Njonolah, who says the party is violating its constitution by keeping executives whose tenure had expired.

He claims the tenure of party Chairman Kwabena Adjei was supposed to have ended last year but the party has extended his tenure for another year.

He is therefore praying a Kumasi High Court to place an interim injunction on executive elections in the Ashanti Region.

That injunction ended Friday, but the court has adjourned hearing till October 10 to decide whether to grant a plea for an extension of the injunction or rule otherwise.

Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor was at the court said NDC lawyers are hoping to settle the case out of court.

Lawyer for NDC Victor Adawudu said he is confident by October 10 an amicable settlement would be reached.

In Accra, the NPP have been sued by party members Oppong Kyekyeku and Rexford Agyei Frimpong who are asking the court to compel the party’s National Council to fix a new date for its October 18 conference.

According to the two plaintiffs that date is not appropriate to enable the three candidates, Nana Akufo Addo, Francis Addai Nimoh and Alan Kyerematen to reach all 140,000 delegates with their campaigns.

However, lawyers for the NPP have raised concerns about the membership of the plaintiffs seeking to stop the October congress.

Godfred Dame a member of the NPP counsel said the plaintiffs are not competent and not fit to carry out such an action.

He explained that details of their NPP membership were not provided in their affidavit.

Ruling on the case will be given on October 3.
