MP for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed has strongly criticised the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for unilaterally taking a decision to change its leadership in Parliament.
The party in a statement on Tuesday announced sudden changes in its leadership in Parliament which saw Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu replaced by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Ellembelle MP, Kofi Armah Boah will replace James Klutse Avedzi as Deputy Minority Leader.
In the statement signed by NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, Kwame Agbodza becomes the new Chief Whip for the opposition side and will be deputised by Banda MP, Ahmed Ibrahim and Ada legislator, Comfort Doyo Ghansah respectively.
However, Murtala Mohammed in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii sen programme on Tuesday explained that the party should have made some consultation with its leadership in Parliament before finalising such a decision.
He said the action taken by the party is undemocratic.
“What they should have done is to consult us and all the literature that I have read, usually they will propose to a parliamentary caucus and the caucus will take a decision.
“Did they consult the leadership or caucus? So it looks as if they are being hounded out…I have no doubt about the quality of leadership we have now…For any reason, would it not be appropriate to consult us?” he quizzed.
The aggrieved MP stressed that such a decision should have been left for the Minority caucus to decide since they are the best to evaluate the performance of the leadership.
He also questioned why the party made changes to the leadership and left only two MPs to remain leaders.
The Tamale Central MP believes the timing of the decision by the party’s hierarchy is ‘wrong’.
“The timing is completely wrong. What is the basis of changing our parliamentary leadership?”, Murtala Mohammed decried.
