The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has announced that the party will hold a nationwide demonstration on September 17th against the Electoral Commission over its refusal to commission a forensic audit of the voter register for the December polls.
Among other issues related to the organisation of the election, Mr Asiedu Nketiah said the NDC has not received any updates on the progress of investigations regarding those arrested for stealing some Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).
He stated that the lack of information has raised suspicions, which is why the demonstration has become necessary among other concerns.
Speaking after the filing of nomination forms for their flagbearer, John Mahama at the Electoral Commission's head office, Mr Nketia said, “Those of you who have been asking us what we would do if they did not comply, this is your answer: on the 17th of this month, the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration in all 16 regional capitals.”
He urged members to visit the Electoral Commission offices across the country, and for those in Accra to go to the headquarters, to submit additional petitions.
Mr Nketiah said these petitions should demand that the Electoral Commission conduct itself in a manner that ensures peaceful, free, and fair elections.
At the recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, the NDC's Director of Elections and IT, Dr Edward Omane Boamah asked the EC to re-exhibit the 2024 voter's register to correct numerous discrepancies uncovered during the recent voter exhibition exercise.
Dr Boamah highlighted the NDC's analysis, which compared the 2023 voter's register with the provisional 2024 register, revealing widespread errors.
“In this meeting, we seek to share with you our observations so far, from comparing voters in the 2023 register with the 2024 provisional register,” he stated.
However the Electoral Commission has not agreed to the party's demands to conduct a forensic audit of the register.
