A compelling new book, The Essence of Ghana, that explores Ghana's identity through its statutory holidays and commemorative traditions is set to launch next week in Accra.
The 82-page publication by MF Production and edited by acclaimed writer Kofi Kpodo, offers readers a fresh lens through which to understand what it truly means to be Ghanaian.
The official launch will take place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, a symbolic location that reflects the book’s theme of heritage and national pride.
Far from being a conventional history text, The Essence of Ghana weaves historical context, cultural insight, and social commentary through the lens of nationally observed days — from Constitution Day (7th January) and Farmers' Day (first Friday in December) to religious and cultural festivities like Eid and Christmas.
The book dives into the roots and significance of these moments, shedding light on the people, values, and traditions that define the nation.
Kofi Kpodo, best known for his work The Mirage Before 40, brings his trademark clarity and thoughtfulness to this new project. “This book seeks to connect the dots between our collective memory and the everyday symbols that shape national consciousness,” he notes ahead of the launch.
The publication arrives at a time when national identity is increasingly central to public discourse, particularly among Ghana’s youth.
As the country navigates its place in a globalised world, The Essence of Ghana is positioned as both a timely educational resource and a heartfelt tribute to Ghanaian pride.
Whether for students researching Ghana’s socio-political evolution, citizens eager to rekindle their patriotic spirit, or international readers curious about the nation’s unique heritage, the book promises to inform, inspire, and unite.
The launch event is expected to draw a diverse audience including educators, cultural historians, policy makers, students, and members of the general public — all eager to rediscover and celebrate the soul of Ghana. (By the way, you will have to wear traditional or formal attire to embody the spirit of the occasion if you desire to attend. RSVPs can be made by contacting Esinu at 050 890 6222.)
For anyone who’s ever asked what truly makes Ghana, Ghana — this book might just be the answer.
