The Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has launched a new project to ensure a productive labour force is maintained in the agricultural sector.
The Farmer Organization Support Center In Africa (FOSCA) also seeks to increase smallholder farmers’ income and improve their livelihoods through effective and efficient farmer-based Organizations.
Acting Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mike Hammah who unveiled the project in Accra said agriculture plays a pivotal role in the attainment of food security on the continent.
He was however worried about the dwindling fortunes of the sector and therefore welcomed the intervention by AGRA.
The Minister said 50.6 percent of the productive labour force is employed in agriculture directly or indirectly, thereby contributing 40 percent of the GDP and over 36 percent of foreign exchange earnings.
He assured AGRA of government’s support for the project.
The Director of Monitoring and Evaluation AGRA, Dr. David Sarfo Ameyaw and the Co-ordinator of FOCAS, Fadel Ndiame said the project is part of initiatives to build the capacity of farmers across the continent.
