Three corporate entities on Tuesday feted inmates of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, as part of activities marking 2011 Day of Caring. The organisations were Newmont Ghana, a mining company, Help-age Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that supports the aged and United Way Ghana, another NGO that provides voluntary services at workplaces. The celebration dubbed: "Caring Day," which is marked on February 14 of every year, was celebrated on the theme: "Sharing is Caring, Caring is Love." The three organisations mobilised volunteers who cleaned the hospital's Geriatric wards and shared snacks with the inmates. The volunteers which included staff of Newmont, members of United Way Ghana and the Retired Ghana Armed Forces Wives Association, scrubbed, removed cobwebs, and changed mosquito nets in the various wards. The Management of Newmont Ghana in addition donated wheel chairs and commodities worth GH¢900 and GH¢1,462 cash to Help-Age Ghana. Dr Chris Anderson, Senior Director for Environment and Social Responsibility at Newmont Ghana said the deed would not be a one off event. He expressed the hope that there would be a continuous relationship between management and the hospital. He commended authorities of the hospital, saying, they have done a good job, the environment is clean. Dr Anderson said he hoped the gesture would help improve lives of the inmates. Mr Yaw Antwi-Dadzie, External Affairs Manager at Newmont Ghana, said the organisation was not only concerned about mining gold but also to demonstrate core values of good leadership and social responsibility. He explained that management was particularly happy about the Work Place Giving Programme where employees contributed part of their salaries to a fund to support programmes such as the Caring Day. Mr Antwi-Dadzie said management in collaboration with United Way Ghana had supported the Kantamanto Street Girls Aid Project, Manya Krobo Queen Mothers Association, Akropong School for the Blind as well as financing various projects for more than five years and estimated at GH¢20,000. Mr Osei Owusu Bempah, Assistant Administrator at the hospital expressed gratitude to the organisations for the support and urged corporate Ghana to support the mental facility. Source: GNA
