The Member of Parliament for Ave-Avenor, Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, says he is not entirely enthused with his new position as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, barely three months of ascension. He described his present position, which he said does not allow him to be himself as had been the case for over a decade debating hot issues, as a “major challenge”. In his 'confession' to Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, on Wednesday, Mr. Adjaho remarked, “I wish I have not been given” the job. He was answering a question posted by the host whether his job was fun, to which he answered in the negative and insisted "it is not"! He also spoke on a wide range of issues on parliamentary affairs. The man who said he enjoys debating topical, often hot issues on the floor of the House and freely expressing his ‘political’ views, feels constrained to listening, observing, analyzing, and among others, passing fair and objective judgments on pronouncements made by his colleagues, that, he claims, is not sitting well with him at all. However, as an experienced legislator, he said he has not allowed his partisan inclination to overshadow his judgment when he presides over the House. In his own words: “I have been objective…I am trying to do my best,” admitting though he has some weaknesses and strengths in discharging his duties. “It is quite tempting having done this (debating) all these years, for 16 years, and then you now find yourself having to remain mute when a debate is going on. It is not easy…but I am trying to do my best.” Mr. Doe Adjaho in his 16 years stint with parliament had been a Majority Chief Whip, Minority Chief Whip, a deputy leader of the House and among others chaired a number of committees; therefore, remaining quiet is hid “biggest weakness”. Touching on the case involving the former Speaker of Parliament, Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes, who is accused of taking away furniture and household items running into hundreds of new Ghana cedis from his official residence, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament said the former’s action “is a big embarrassment to the house,” He noted the former Speaker might have been misinformed about what he was entitled to. On the work of the Appointments Committee, Mr. Doe Adjaho, who is its chairman, said even though the committee was not an inquisitorial one, contrary to public expectation, he was somewhat “disappointed in some of the nominees” appointed by President Mills. Mr. Doe Ajaho was also not enthused by how some members of parliament abused their Parliamentary Privileges and called on the House to bring those members to order. He was peeved, for instance, by the seizure of cars from former office holders that are purported to be government’s own and called for “a better way” of solving issues bothering on state vehicles.
