A political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kwesi Amakye Boateng is calling on the various political parties to expand their electoral college for their respective parliamentary primaries elections. He stated that parliamentary primaries are is often characterized by ‘the highest bidder’ which sometimes affect the quality of candidates voted to represent the constituency. He suggested that if the electoral college is expanded, it would prevent candidates from engaging in bribery and corruption. Speaking Tuesday to Adom News, Mr Amakye Boateng expressed worry that delegates vote for particular candidates who offer money to them rather than capitalizing on the experience and quality of the aspirants. The political science analyst was commenting on possible effects of losing experienced MPs in Parliament. Both the NDC and the NPP have lost sitting MPs during parliamentary primaries for the December 2012 election. Some NPP members who would be kissing good bye to parliamentary duties include the MP for Ahafo Ano South, Stephen Kweku Balado-Manu; and Maxwell Kofi Jumah, MP for Asokwa; Bernice Beatrice Boateng New Juabeng South, Professor Emmanuel Amoako (Abuakwa North), Amankwaa Asiamah (Fanteakwa) and Joseph Ampoma Bosompem (Akyem Swedru). Others are Ashong Narh, (Tema East), Elizabeth Sackey, (Okaikoi North), Yaw Baah (Kumawu), Edward Ennin (Obuasi) and Nana Abu Bonsra (Fomena). The ruling NDC lost five sitting Members of Parliament on in the Greater Accra Region, namely, Alex Tettey-Enyo, Alfred Abayateye, Adu Asare and Nii Nortey Dua, representing Ada, Sege and Ledzekuku respectively. The rest include Deputy Education Minister Elizabeth Amoah Tetteh, Michael Teye Nyaunu, Ho Central, and Capt. George Mfodwo, North Tongu. Mr Amakye Boateng emphasized that delegates should also consider the duties and the experience of the candidates they vote for to represent them.
