This Saturday on Newsfile, host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panel will confront three of the week’s most charged national issues: how the August 6 Ghana Air Force helicopter crash could reshape the fight against illegal mining, the government’s review of prophecies by the Presidential Envoy, and the arrests of citizens over online speech.
The crash, which claimed eight lives, including two ministers of state and six others, has sparked fresh calls for a “ruthless” war on galamsey.
Government officials, Civil Society Organisations, and individuals have called for uncompromising national action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The show will also probe a controversial August 10 directive requiring religious leaders to submit spiritual messages related to governance, security, or stability to the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations.
The Presidential Envoy has indicated that over 200 submissions have been received, but only 2–5% merit further review. Critics have argued that the policy risks infringing on religious freedom and could blur the line between stewardship and censorship.
The panel will also discuss this week’s arrests of TikTok comedians Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof, as well as activist Daniel Adomako (Sir-Obama Pokuase), over commentary in a viral video.
The New Patriotic Party National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, has condemned the arrests as “shamelessly biased” and “partisan.” The detentions also echo concerns raised in the 2024 U.S. State Department Human Rights Report on Ghana, which flagged arbitrary arrests and restrictions on media freedom.
From loss and reform to the boundaries of dissent, this Saturday on Newsfile will unpack what these developments mean for law enforcement, environmental protection, religious expression, and democratic space.
