All the Presidential Candidates of the 2016 General Elections except Dr Edward Mahama failed to turn up at advertised National Peace Summit.
The summit, organised by the Legon Rotary Club was expected to bring together flagbearers of the NPP, NDC, CPP and PNC to sign a peace agreement and pledge a violence-free elections.
But the Presidential Candidates for the Convention People's Party, Ivor Greenstreet, the Progressive People's Party's Papa Kwesi Nduom, the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, the National Democratic Congress, President John Dramani Mahama, All People's Congress' Hassan Ayariga amongst didn't show up.
Although none of the parties has officially stated a reason for not attending the summit, the flagbearer of the People's National Convention(PNC) criticised all other Presidential Candidates for not showing up at the peace summit.
Their absence according to Dr Mahama is a sign of a 'politics of deception' that is being practised in Ghana.
"My presence here says it all...there is a peace summit and I am here. It fits the description I gave to the political leadership in this country...you tell people I will be here and do not show up," he indicated.
Speaking at the summit, the Chairman of the National Peace Council charged politicians to desist from any acts that could plunge the nation into violence during the 2016 elections.
Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante said: "...I want to plead with politicians to ensure that they overcome cynicism and if we are able to overcome this cynicism, I do not see why when elections are approaching we would be sitting on tenterhooks."
He is also called on young people not to allow politicians to use them to foment trouble during the polls.
