Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has been selected by President Akufo-Addo as his running mate for the 2020 general elections.
The President made the announcement, on Saturday, June 27, at Swiss Spirit Hotel, where he was acclaimed as flagbearer for the NPP by party executives and Council of Elders.
He lauded Bawumia for working “tirelessly and effectively” to support the government since the NPP came into power in 2017.
“The party will complete its presidential ticket - a feat that appears to allude some of our opponents. We have no such difficulty. We have a most fitting person to feature on our ticket, my good and loyal friend Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia,” President Akufo-Addo said.
He told party executives and leaders present that, along with Bawumia, he would do everything in his power to lead the party to victory in 2020.
Vice President Dr Bawumia also speaking at the event stated that he was appreciative of President Akufo-Addo's decision to partner him four conservative times as his running mate.
"This day is historic, it has never happened before that a presidential candidate will select the same running mate four times in a row."
"His excellency selected me in 2008, 2012, 2016 and now in 2020...He could have dropped me but he stuck with me and I am so honoured that he did."
He stated that he would never take for granted the trust the President had in him, adding that "it has been a privilege and an honour working for you."
