Walewale MP and sponsor of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, Dr Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, says nothing should stand in the way of the bill’s passage.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, Dr Kabiru said the bill has already gone through the necessary preparatory stages and can be passed within 48 hours if the leadership of Parliament makes it a priority.
“If the government or the leader of the house is so minded and is serious about this bill, we can pass it within 48 hours,” he stated.
He explained that Parliament has previously fast-tracked important legislation under a certificate of urgency, and the same could be done in this case.
“In fact, within 24 hours, no single bill of the house has gone through the house unless it is coming under the certificate of urgency. So, I mean, it could equally be advertised as something that can come under a certificate of urgency,” he said.
The Walewale MP emphasised that there is no legal or procedural barrier preventing the bill from being tabled and passed swiftly.
“It’s been gazetted already, and I don’t think there should be any limitation or anything that should hinder the successful sail of the bill throughout the process,” Dr Kabiru said.
He insisted that if Parliament’s leadership is genuinely committed, the bill could be passed without delay.
“I think that realistically, if the business of the house is so minded, or the business committee is so minded, the leader of the house is so minded to make it a priority, this bill should not take the house 48 hours to pass it,” he added.
Dr Kabiru’s remarks come amid renewed debate over the fate of the bill, with growing calls from its sponsors for Parliament to expedite action and send it to the President for assent.
