The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ketu North Constituency of the Volta Region has called on the police to uphold its integrity by intensifying internal security during Saturday’s polls to prevent violence.

The Acting Ketu North Constituency NPP Chairman, Mark Thompson Gbeti said this was imperative following pockets of violent attacks and destruction of the party's campaign materials.

Addressing the press, he said there was heightened tension hence, the police must be proactive to safeguard the peace and harmony of the constituency.

Ketu North has been recognized as one of the hotspots in the upcoming general elections in the Volta Region.

It is expected to witness fierce competition between the NPP’s Enoch Amegbletor and the National Democratic Congress’ Edem Agbana in the parliamentary elections.

Mr Gbeti had reservations about hostility in the heat of campaign activities, including attacks on Mr Amegbletor’s team during a community engagement in Tadzewu on November 21, 2024.

He explained that some persons identified as followers of the NDC pelted stones at the team, compelling the NPP people to vacate the scene.

“The attackers pursued them, leading to a confrontation during which Mr Philipson Eli Dzokoto, a Regional communications team member and dean of coordinators, was severely assaulted. He
is currently receiving treatment at IHDN Missionary Hospital at Dzadokpo. We extend our sympathies to him and others affected by this cowardly attack”, he said.

He lamented the inability of the police to arrest the perpetrators who are walking about freely, adding that “this delay in justice undermines public confidence in our democratic process and emboldens those who seek to disrupt the peace.”

Mr Agbeti issued a three-day ultimatum to the police to expedite investigations and arrest the culprits and ensure “immediate application of law to restore confidence in the security apparatus and deter future occurrences.”

“Failure to act within this period will compel us to escalate the matter to higher authorities and
explore all lawful avenues to protect the safety and rights of our members and the constituency at large”, he further indicated.

He also called on the police to hold onto the virtues and ethos of their profession by upholding the law to ensure the safety of the constituents.
