National executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are to meet the Inspector General of Police(IGP) Mohammed Alhassan, to agree plans to provide adequate security for Sunday’s special delegates’ congress.
This was disclosed by the General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyapong, after a steering committee meeting at the party headquarters in Accra last Monday.
Security at polling centres across the country was high on the agenda.
“We will be meeting the IGP, he will liaise with our Regional Chairmen and the National officers who have been assigned to the various regions to make sure that adequate security is provided,” he stated.
The NPP is set to hold a special delegates congress, Sunday, with the aim of pruning the seven candidates contesting for the flagbearership slot to five.
Among those contesting the flagbearership slot are Asuogyaman MP Kofi Osei Ameyaw,Former Trades Minister Alan Kyeremanten,Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey,Mampong MP Francis Addai Nimoh,Former Information Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng,2012 flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo,Former Trade and Industry Minister Dr.Kofi Konadu Apraku.
The Electoral Commission(EC) will conduct the elections which will take place simultaneously in all ten regions of the country with about 787 delegates expected to cast their votes.
These delegates are made up of Constituency Chairmen, Regional Executives, Members of Parliament, National Executive Committee members, Funding members , Members of the Council of Elders.
Ten polling stations will be mounted in each region and an additional one at the party headquarters.
Polls will be opened at 8am and close at 3pm.
Lately,the party has been beset with conflicts following a disruption of a press conference by the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and the General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyapong, when some unidentified machete wielding men trooped the party headquarters .
The situation evoked series of accusations and counter accusations that seemed to eclipse the party’s vision of uniting its members for the upcoming delegates congress.
Addressing these pertinent issues confronting the party, 2012 flagbearer of the party, Nana Akufo-Addo has called feuding factions within the party to settle their differences amicably in order to wrestle power during the 2016 General Elections.
“We can’t win if we cut each other into pieces. It’s not possible”, he implored.
