Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Clement Apaak has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using whatever means necessary to prevent him from being part of the eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
According to him, although he was able to retain his seat, he received a number of threats from members from the other side that he would lose his seat in the 2020 elections.
In an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show Monday, May 31, the outspoken National Democracy Congress (NDC) politician stated that due to the numerous threats, the 2020 election was a hectic and vigorous one for him.
“I was one of the targeted MPs that the NPP government had determined I should not return to Parliament. Apparently, they found me a difficult nut to crack.
“In fact, my good friend Pius told me on one occasion when we met on a flight to Tamale, that I should watch my movement and that they are coming after me. That was a threat,” he told host Mamavi Owusu Aboagye.
But reacting to the accusations, former Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide said the NPP never planned anything evil against the NDC MP.
According to him, it is the objective of every political party to win any election, as such, the NPP was only working to win the Builsa seat but not targeting Dr Apaak as an individual.
“Let me once again assure my colleague that the NPP is going after all the 275 seats in Parliament. It doesn’t have anything to do with him as a person. The NPP had a parliamentary candidate in Clement’s constituency and we were very supportive of that fine young man who we wanted to take over from Dr. Apaak.
“To all intent and purposes, we believe he is a fine young man but we believe the people of Builsa had a better alternative so we supported him but again not because we targeted Builsa as a seat but we had our eyes on all the 275 seats and that’s fair for any party to the context in any election,” he expressed.
Mr Hadzide stated that in 2024, the NPP will secure victory in the Builsa constituency.
