The MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri has registered his misgivings about government’s delay in implementing the recommendations contained in a report about a quarry explosion at Nsawam in December 2015.
Frank Annor Dompreh believes the implementation of the report will ensure justice is served to both survivors and family of the deceased.
A heavy explosion on a quarry site on December 24, 2015, drove fear and panic into residents of Nsawam.
A 38-year-old welder, Ibrahim Mohammed lost his life when he was caught in one of those explosions. Several others were injured in the process of running to safety.
A ministerial committee set up to investigate the incident found the negligence of the mining company AKY, responsible for the disaster.
It recommended prosecution, but several months down the line the interior ministry has yet to enforce the recommendation.
Speaking to Joynews, Dompreh charged the government for being unsympathetic to the cause of the survivors.
“They should hasten to ensure that the recommendations are implemented to the fullest,” he said.
According to him, the implementation of the report will avert the situation “where residents of my constituency specifically Paebo will begin to start thinking that government has given up on them.”
If the government can donate three million dollars to Haiti for having suffered a similar fate, he said, it can do same for the people of Nsawam.
Without mincing words, the MP said if the cause of the accident is attributed to the negligence of the company, the government needs to start prosecution against the management of it.
“Let’s use this as a test case, let’s use it as an example and let people know that we are beginning to open a new chapter when it comes to the relationship between residents and existing companies, especially this mining companies and let them know that when you are given a permit there is a certain array of rules and when you flout it has it own punitive measures,” he added.
