One person has been picked up by the Accra Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the police service in connection with the faking of electronic roadworthy stickers.
This follows Joy News’ investigations into how middle men are introducing fake electronic roadworthy stickers into the system.
The suspect, Francis Vivor, is a well known middle man who operates at the Weija DVLA and who managed to fake a sticker for Joy News investigative journalist Kwetey Nartey.
Operations Officer of the Accra Central MTTD ASP Sulemana Sulley Jnr. told Joy News, they are hunting for other suspects as well.
The arrest comes at a time when the DVLA had given assurances that the electronic stickers could not be duplicated. The electronic versions are to ‘significantly’ minimize the rampant practice of faking roadworthy stickers.
“Fake roadworthy stickers are becoming a thing of the past”, the DVLA official maintained in an interview with Kwetey. The electronic versions are to ‘significantly’ minimize the rampant practice of faking roadworthy stickers.
In order to test the claim by the DVLA, Kwetey Nartey contacted a middleman, Francis Vivor, who promised to get the investigative journalist a sticker. He did.
“If a police[man] says he can catch you with this road safety certificate tell him he is a liar”, Francis assured Kwetey Nartey who paid paid GHC150 for a fake one.
No inspection was required on the car and it took three days to obtain the fake certificate.
But after a two-dimensional bar code scanner is run on the electronic sticker it comes out as fake. Kwetey then led the police to effect the arrest of Mr Vivor.
The atmosphere was quiet charged as Francis Vivor tried to resist arrest. It took a couple of minutes for the police officers to handcuff him.
ASP Sulemana Sulley Jnr explained that “even if you don’t tell us yourself that this vehicle did not go through the system, through this device the system it is clear that your vehicle did not go through the process”
