Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, says only eleven of the over three hundred traditional authorities in Ghana have codified lines of succession.
This, he believes, accounts for a number of chieftaincy disputes during installation.
The Ministry, together with the traditional authorities, is working towards codification of the line of succession of all the traditional areas.
"I am going to meet the traditional councils so the resources they need to do this will be provided. Sometimes it's research, to get people to get out to be picking resources and all that", he said.
According to the Chieftaincy Minister, about seventy percent of issues of threatening national security are related to chieftaincy disputes.
Chiefs in Ghana derive their authority from the Chieftaincy Act 2008.
According to the Minister, the demands of modern society have made some provisions in the Act obsolete.
He believes there is an urgent need to amend portions of the Act.
"It was passed in 2008, modern developments mean that we have to look at it again. I am interested to deepen the power of the chiefs", he added.
Meanwhile, the Chieftaincy Minister has revealed the government continues to invest huge resources into conflict resolution at the expense of other needs.
He says necessary measures are being adopted to deal with the increasing disputes.
"We want to bring down the number of disputes drastically. So I have segregated them into the short, medium and long term. So have gone on for a long time and there are some we can nib into the bud quickly", he added.
