Former pro boxing champ, Kassim Ouma was arrested for battery in L.A. on Friday -- after knocking out a man who was allegedly making gay advances towards him ... TMZ Sports has learned.
Law enforcement sources told us ... the former IBF junior middleweight champion was telling investigators ... he was hanging out in Hollywood early Friday morning when he struck up a conversation with a guy he had just met.
Ouma said the two went back to the other man's home for a drink ... where the guy allegedly made a pass at the boxer.
We were told ... Ouma claimed he politely declined multiple advances ... but said when he got up to leave, the guy made one final move -- and Ouma shoved him away.
The altercation then escalated ... with Ouma allegedly knocking the guy out cold.
Cops were called to the scene -- where the victim was treated and transported to a nearby hospital.
Ouma was ultimately arrested for felony battery causing great bodily harm.
We tried to contact Ouma for comment -- but he was still behind bars.
Ouma, 35, returned to the sport last December after a two-year absence, fighting at an Econolodge in Allentown, Pennsylvania. His career hit a major rough patch starting with a 2006 loss to then-middleweight champion, Jermain Taylor which started a stretch in which Ouma went 2-6 over eight bouts, losing to Saul Roman, Cornelius Bundrage, Gabriel Rosado, Vanes Martirosyan, and Gennady Golovkin.
Ouma won the IBF junior middleweight title in 2004 from Verno Phillips, making one successful defense against Kofi Jantuah before dropping the belt to Roman Karmazin in 2005.
