Executive Director of the Institute of Educations Studies (IFEST), Peter Anti, has indicated that government is in a haste to pass the controversial Public Universities Bill (PUB) before the 7th Parliament ends.
According to him, “There is no urgency in passing this bill [PUB] and that is the fundamental issue we have to establish".
In an interview with JoyNews’ Mamavi Owusu-Aboagye on the AM Show, Thursday, Mr Anti emphasised that: “None of our public universities is going through a crisis that needs an urgent passing of a bill to help resolve their Challenges.”
His comment comes after the considerations regarding the passage of the disputed Public University Bill was halted indefinitely.
The move is a resultant development following a meeting with the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other ranking members of Parliament on Wednesday.
Stakeholders are expected to submit their concerns by Tuesday 21 December 17, 2020
Nonetheless, Peter Anti mentioned that, if the concerns raised by the other stakeholders are not taken into consideration, the bill will be passed on Tuesday.
Reacting to the assumption, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah debunked the assertion of parliament being in a haste to pass the bill.
According to him, Parliament is willing to take into consideration all the concerns raised by the stakeholders and amend the necessary clauses in the bill.
