The planned reduction in passport application fees from GH¢500 to GH¢350 will only take effect after Parliament returns from recess and amends the Fees and Charges Act.

Although the government had announced a 30 per cent cut in the cost of an ordinary passport, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, clarified that the new fee will only take effect when Parliament reconvenes.

The revised fee is part of a broader set of passport reforms scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28, 2025, but the price change remains subject to legislative approval.

Mr Ablakwa had earlier informed Parliament on March 13, 2025, that the reduction was in response to public concerns over affordability.

He assured that the government remained committed to keeping passport costs reasonable while maintaining robust security standards.

Parliament is currently on recess and is expected to resume on a yet-to-be-announced date in May.

An amendment to the Fees and Charges Act is anticipated to be presented when the House reconvenes.
