In a remarkable display of community empowerment and transformation, Plan International Ghana's initiatives have sparked a revival in the lives of residents in Atonkor-Buem. Through a range of impactful projects focusing on education, health, and economic empowerment, the organization has brought new hope and opportunities to this vibrant community.

Plan International Ghana's Chief People Officer, Lawrence Ncube, spoke on behalf of the organization, highlighting the significant strides made in Atonkor-Buem and the profound impact on its residents.

"We are thrilled to witness the tangible changes taking place here in Atonkor-Buem. Our mission has always been to empower communities and create sustainable development, and the progress we see today is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved," said Ncube.

One of the flagship projects that have garnered attention is the establishment of modern educational facilities. The construction of a new school building equipped with classrooms, libraries, and laboratories has revolutionized the learning environment for children in the community. Students, who once had limited access to quality education, now have the resources they need to thrive academically.

The delegation comprised twenty-one Plan International staff from the United Kingdom, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, the United States of America, Japan, Switzerland, Kenya, Australia, and Senegal.

Led by Plan International Ghana Country Director, Constant Tchona, the delegation first paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the Jasikan Municipality at the Municipal Assembly. They discussed the transformative impacts of Plan International Ghana’s initiatives on Child Protection, Education, Girls and Youth Empowerment, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) on the municipality's progress.

In a welcome address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Elizabeth Kessewa Anim-Adjornor, commended Plan International Ghana’s involvement in the development of the Municipality since 2021.

According to her, Plan International Ghana has contributed immensely to the development of the Municipal assembly. She pledged the Assembly’s commitment to ensure the proper usage and maintenance of the facilities constructed by the organization.

In addition to education, Plan International Ghana has focused on improving healthcare services in Atonkor-Buem. The organization collaborated with local health authorities to upgrade medical facilities and provide essential training for healthcare workers. This has resulted in better access to healthcare for community members, particularly mothers and children.

"Before, we had to travel long distances to receive medical care. Now, with the upgraded facilities and trained staff, we feel more confident about the health of our families," shared Akua Mensah, a mother of three.

The economic empowerment programmes introduced by Plan International Ghana have also made a significant difference. Initiatives supporting entrepreneurship and skills development have enabled residents to start their businesses and gain financial independence. Through training workshops and access to microloans, individuals have been able to turn their entrepreneurial dreams into reality.

Delivering a statement, the Country Director of Plan International Ghana, Constant Tchona, thanked the chief, elders, and community members for committing to the organization’s programmes with open arms.

"Strong leadership in the community has paved the way for the success of Plan International Ghana’s projects here in Atonkor-Buem. It is important to sustain the gains. With further cooperation, we can continue to work for the protection of all, especially girls,” Mr Tchona affirmed.

The impact of these projects extends beyond the tangible infrastructure and services. It has sparked a sense of community pride and unity, with residents actively participating in the development activities. Community members have formed committees to oversee various projects, ensuring sustainability and long-term success.

A member of the Atonkor-Buem Adolescent Club, Latifa, delivered a passionate speech underscoring the transformative impact of Plan International Ghana’s projects on the lives of girls in the community. Latifa highlighted advancements in rights awareness, reproductive health education, and academic performance among girls, attributing these positive changes to Plan International Ghana's initiatives.

"Girls now feel safe and protected. We now live in a safer and more hygienic environment. We thank Plan International Ghana for impacting our lives. We call for more support," she intimated.

The transformation of Atonkor-Buem stands as a shining example of how strategic interventions and community involvement can create lasting change. Plan International Ghana's dedication to improving lives is evident in the smiles of children attending the new school, the healthier families visiting the upgraded health facilities, and the budding entrepreneurs shaping a brighter future for themselves and their community.

The visit culminated in a tour of Plan International Ghana-sponsored facilities, including a Centre and a Mechanized Water System in the community. The Drop-in centre, constructed in 2021 under the “Be Smart” Project, provides shelter and support services for various vulnerable populations, including adolescents. The centre offers a safe and welcoming environment where individuals can access essential resources and assistance. The Mechanized Water System, commissioned in October 2023 under the Integrated Package for Sustainable Development (IPADEV), serves more than half of the community, ensuring their access to clean and safe water.

The project seeks to contribute to creating a resilient and protective environment both at home and at school for better health and learning outcomes for children, especially girls.

As Atonkor-Buem continues on this path of revival and progress, it serves as a beacon of hope for other communities across Ghana and beyond. Through collaboration, determination, and a shared vision, the possibilities for positive change are indeed limitless.
