The Brong Ahafo regional capital, Sunyani will once again be agog with political activity in November as the People’s National Convention [PNC] storms the town for its 2 in 1 congress ahead of the 2012 elections. The congress which is scheduled for November 25-27 will be used to elect both a flag bearer and national executives to lead the party to the 2012 general elections. Filing of nominations forms for the congress begins from September 30 and ends on October 20, 2011. Ahead of the congress, the party has asked its constituencies to hold conferences to elect their parliamentary candidates within the next three weeks before congress. At a press briefing at the party’s head office in Accra, the General Secretary of the party, Bernard Mornah said female aspirants seeking to contest various positions in the party will not pay any fees apart from an administrative fee of 100 Ghana cedis. The 2007 filing fees have been maintained for aspirants contesting the various positions in the party. Flag bearer aspirants will pay GH¢ 5,000 while aspirants for National Chairman and General Secretary positions will pay GH¢ 1,000 cedis a-piece. Aspirants contesting other executive positions will pay a filing fee of GH¢ 500. Mr. Mornah explained that the party’s decision not to increase the nomination fees for the upcoming congress was to allow the youths to step up to contest for positions in the party. He also added that the non-payment of nomination fees by female aspirants is to “serve as a sufficient stimulus for women to present themselves easily for election into positions at all levels”. The PNC congratulated the CPP for its successful congress and expressed the hope that the two Nkrumaist fronts can unit to annex power in the 2012 general elections.
