The timely intervention of the police prevented a clash between supporters of the NPP and the NDC at Akumadan in the Ashanti Region.
Police reinforcement from Offinso was called in to help quell the possible violence and bring the situation under control.
The situation was precipitated by disagreements over the ongoing special voting exercise in the area.
Explaining the incident to Nyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah, Divisional Police Commander for Offinso, Chief Supt. Kwadwo Appiagyei, down played the seriousness of the incident.
He said although party agents who will be working on December 28, were allowed to vote during the special voting, agents of the NDC did not submit their list and therefore could not vote.
The NDC party agents did not understand why those of the NPP were voting while they could not vote.
Suspecting fowl play they tried to prevent the NPP agents from voting resulting in heated arguments with the EC officials and the NPP party agents.
According to the police officer, the presiding officer supervising the elections asked the complainants to bring their list to enable them vote.
But that was not enough to calm tension warranting the intervention of the police.
Calm has meanwhile returned and voting is proceeding peacefully.
