Police in Kumasi have arrested a 34-year old sales executive for posing as an operative of the Criminal Investigations Department. Charles Nkansah faces prosecution on a charge of falsely pretending to be a police officer. His arrest comes a day after a 26-year old electrician was jailed 18 months after he was picked last week for similar offence. Regional Police Commander, DCOP Patrick Timbilla, said the command is worried about increasing reports of activities of imposters in the metropolis. According to him, civilians who pose as police officers hire taxis under the pretext of paying for the services at the barracks but end up swindling the drivers. He said Nkansah hired the driver of a taxi car from Adum and headed for the regional headquarters. On reaching there the suspect pointed the Striking Force Unit office as his place of work, after which he asked the driver to send him to Abuakwa. At a police check point near University of Education Winneba, College of Technology Education, Nkansah hid his face and told the driver he wanted to avoid his supposed colleagues police personnel. Officers at check-point became suspicious about his demeanor and confronted him. He failed to produce a service number and ID card after the driver had given the police the identity of his passenger leading to his arrest. DCOP Timbilla noted that the “Operation Calm Net” by the police service is in force to fish out such unscrupulous persons who have been tarnishing the image of the service.
