The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare has commended the political parties and presidential candidates, and their supporters for how they have conducted themselves since the election process began.
According to him, this conduct has made the electoral process less tense, with minimal to zero violence, making it one of the most peaceful election processes in Ghana’s history.
Speaking at the signing of the 2024 peace pact on Thursday, November 28, Dr Dampare acknowledged that the efforts of the presidential candidates, their supporters, and the entire Ghanaian populace have significantly eased the work of the Police Service.
However, he emphasised that the most important task, the main election on 7 December, remains ahead and urged the presidential candidates to continue upholding their commitment to maintaining peace for a successful electoral process.
Dr Dampare reaffirmed the Police Service’s dedication to fulfilling its constitutional mandate of ensuring peace, security, and law and order throughout the election period, the post-election phase, and beyond.
“With this commitment, we want to let you know that we will not be the source of any disturbances that will corrupt the peace that we cherish so much,” he said.
He also called on all stakeholders to play their part, urging them not to become, or allow themselves to be, the source of any actions that might disturb the peace of the nation.
Dr Dampare stressed that the Police Service’s pledge to maintain peace is not just rhetoric but a deliberate and purposeful commitment.
