First Lady Lordina Mahama has urged the Ghana Prisons Service to move beyond ‘warehousing’ inmates and provide them with unemployable skills.
This according to her will prepare the inmates for the world of work awaiting them once they get out of the four walls of prison.
Lordina Mahama made this statement when she paid a visit to the female wing of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison Wednesday, March 9.
The visit makes Lordina Mahama the first wife of a sitting President to visit a prison. She follows the footsteps of her husband who also became the first sitting president to visit a prison.
She donated medical equipment and drugs to the infirmary of the Nsawam Prisons.

The acting Director General of the Prisons Service, Emmanuel Adzator, called for a public-private partnership to raise the status of Ghana's prisons.
According to Emmanuel Adzator, the prisons are struggling to meet international standards, making it difficult for proper reformation to take place.
Joy News' Latif reported that the inmates also bore the brunt of the water shortage that has hit the Nsawam-Adoagri Township. The leader of the inmates at the female wing, Mary Gyamaa, called on the First Lady to intervene for them to get potable water.
The Eastern Regional Commander of Prisons, DDP Isaac Egyir, also announced that plans are far advanced to separately house remand prisoners from convicts.
He also called on leadership to sink five more boreholes there to bring relief to both inmates and officers.
