Member of Parliament(MP) for Tamale Central, Inusa Fuseini is unhappy with ex-President Rawlings due to a story the latter told about ‘Atta the mortuary man’ during the just ended delegates’ congress of the NDC.
Mr Fuseini said but for his choice of the name ‘Atta’ for the story’s protagonist, which coincided with the name of the current president, the ex-president’s story could have been a very humorous one.
During the eighth delegates' congress of the ruling NDC which saw party members thought to be either pro-Rawlings or pro-Mills gaining key positions in the party, ex-President Rawlings upon taking his turn to address the congress told a story about a so-called friend of his called ‘Atta’.
According to him, Atta was a drunkard who worked at the 37 military hospital mortuary. He narrated that he (Rawlings) had advised his long time friend on numerous occasions about the negative impact alcohol could have on his health but ‘Atta Mortuary Man’ would not listen.
Eventually, the former president noted, his friend gave up his drinking habit, transforming into a healthy, good-looking worker at the same hospital to the amazement of those who knew his past life course.
Mr Rawlings said Atta’s change came to him as a surprise and a source of inspiration and that he (Rawlings) presented Atta with a present and in return Atta promised to “powder” the ex-president upon his death.
“Atta the mortuary man”, which was supposed to be a comic relief, rather confused delegates who had gathered at the West Africa Examination Council Hall in Tamale.
Yet, when President Mills took his turn to address the congress, he stated that “after listening to the former president about the story of Atta, the mortuary man, I have on a lighter note decided to drop Atta from my name.”
The Tamale Central MP, who was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, noted that he did not personally understand the import of the story.
He was unhappy that Mr Rawlings chose to use a name that the sitting president of Ghana was using, adding that “the president never drunk or smoked.” He felt the former president’s story showed disrespect for the Presidency.
However, Alhaji Fuseini said he was happy about the way President Mills dealt with the whole situation.
Nana Ohene Ntow, who was a co-panelist on the programme, added that the ex-president’s “comic relief was in bad taste and that the story itself was a morbid one for such a congress."
