On the 15th of June 2010, I read a feature article with the above title on Ghanaweb about Ghanaian students studying in the UK on Ghana Government scholarship complaining about their stipends not paid, albeit paid in time. The students sited harassments from landlords and exclusion letters from their respective schools as some of the trauma they endure as a result of the delay in the payment of their stipends.I have observed that about two weeks after the publication of the said feature, the Ghana High Commission in UK has not come out to respond to the concerns raised in the featured article which leaves enough room for concern. In addition to the students receiving exclusion letters from schools and eviction threats from their renting agencies, they also face other difficulties such as feeding, accessing the library and transportation. The Scholarship Secretariat as a matter of priority should come out now to tell us when money was transferred from the GETFUND to the education sector of the Ghana High Commission for payment and when this monies were paid to the students and if there was a deliberate delay on the part of the authorities at the Ghana High Commission, there must be an investigation into the circumstances leading to that situation.I would also want the education sector of the Ghana High Commission to come out with facts and figures and the timeline of receipts of GETFUND from Accra and when payments to students were made. The silence of the Ghana High Commission to the UK is suggestive of dereliction of duty and officials responsible for the education unit must explain to us why they allow students to go through such hardships before they act (if they eventually do).I would revisit this issue later, putting it in a proper context if the Ghana High Commission in the UK does not respond. His Excellency the High Commissioner, I hope you would take action before we descend heavily on your staff.
