The Ghana Statistical Service has for the third time in a row, postponed the announcement of rebased inflation figures.
This would have covered inflation rates from January to May using the new basket of goods and services which has been increased to 267 from the current 242 items. The release of the revised figures which was initially billed for March this year, was deferred on two earlier occasions due to challenges in computing data gathered from the field.
Acting Government Statisticia, Dr Philomena Nyarko explained that the delay is due to some inconsistencies recorded in the data collected.
“We’ve entered the data and done all the calculations. But with any statistical work you’d have to validate the results and whilst doing this, we realized that one data point was out of range and so we need time to find out what is contributing to this” she said.
Dr Nyarko is however assuring the announcement will be made next week
“We’re working very hard at it and so come next week Wednesday we will release the final CPI rebased figures with the quarterly GDP figures and the PPI figures” she said.
Just like the rebasing of the country’s GDP estimates which tripled the value of the economy, the review in the calculation of inflation rate is also expected to better reflect the spending patterns of Ghanaians.
