The mortal remains of some Ghanaians murdered in The Gambia about four years ago were Sunday night repatriated to Ghana. Six out of the eight Ghanaians confirmed dead in that country were brought back. Although media reports suggested 44 Ghanaian nationals were abducted and murdered, a fact finding team set up to investigate the killings could not establish the basis for the reports. Investigations into the killings dragged with the Gambian authorities dragging their feet and failing to cooperate with investigators and government officials. The issue assumed a political dimension and was drummed during the 2008 elections. The then NPP government was accused of being insensitive and ineptitude because it failed to exact the necessary pressures on the Gambian government to seek justice for the innocent Ghanaians who dastardly murdered in that country. Eventually an ECOWAS team was involved in the investigations and the report was presented to government a couple of months ago. The Gambian Health Minister Dr Jalo Marieto who led the delegation to handover the mortal remains to the Ghanaian officials expressed the hope that the occasion will strengthen ties between the two countries. “We pray that the Almighty God will give fortitude and solace to the families of our beloved brethren who have left this life,” she said. Speaking to Joy News at the military Air force base at Burma Camp, Foreign Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, said Ghana was bound by the fact finding team.
