The African Media Network for Health and Environmental Promotion (REMAPSEN) celebrated excellence in journalism and advocacy at its annual awards ceremony, with a special tribute to Dr. Michel Sidibé.
The former UNAIDS Executive Director and global health leader received a special recognition award for his outstanding contributions to Africa’s health and environmental sectors.
Dr Sidibé’s remarkable 44-year career has been defined by visionary leadership and groundbreaking achievements.
As the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNAIDS, he introduced the transformative 90-90-90 strategy, which enabled over 25 million people to access life-saving HIV treatments, drastically reducing new infections and AIDS-related deaths worldwide.
Beyond his role at UNAIDS, Dr Sidibé served as Mali’s Minister of Health and Social Affairs, champing people-centred policies and advocating for Africa’s health autonomy.
His work as the African Union Special Envoy for the African Medicines Agency (AMA) further cemented his legacy.
He spearheaded the rapid ratification of the AMA Treaty, leading to its implementation in 2021, aligning Africa’s health strategies with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision.
In recognition of his enduring impact, REMAPSEN has named its awards after Dr. Sidibé.
The initiative, led by REMAPSEN Vice-President for Environmental Promotion and Awards Director Mrs Line Renée Batongué, aims to inspire African journalists to champion human rights, gender issues, and sustainable development.
Dr. Sidibé expressed his gratitude while accepting the special recognition award, highlighting the critical role of journalist-led advocacy in reshaping public health narratives.
“Journalists have the power to transform public health discourses and drive meaningful change,” he remarked.
REMAPSEN President Bamba Youssouf emphasized the significance of this tribute, stating, “By dedicating these awards to Dr Sidibé, we not only honour his relentless work but also underline the role of journalism in advancing Africa’s health and environmental goals.”
The REMAPSEN Awards continue to underscore journalists' vital role in driving progress across the continent.
Dr Sidibé’s legacy remains a powerful source of inspiration, pushing changemakers to advocate for equitable health solutions and sustainable development in Africa.
