Former Black Stars Coach, Kwasi Appiah has suggested that, captain's armband should be rotated amongst at least three players in future when leadership crises comes to the fore.
"I think the best way to sort out this captaincy issue is to rotate it amongst three or four players in future," Appiah told Joy Sports.
The teammates of Appiah in the 1992 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), notably, Abedi Pele and Anthony Yeboah have spoken about the disunity in camp during the tournament twenty eight years ago.
The 'Silent Killer' as he was nicknamed by most of the current group of senior national team players does not want to dwell on the past.
"I don't think what happened many years ago should be a topic of conversation," he began "I think what is important for us right now as a country is what we learnt over years and how that can help us in future."
Recently, Appiah was quoted by Happy FM saying:
“Looking at our current situation I will propose we rotate the captain’s armband and also a general captain appointed to speak on behalf of the players. Brazil and other countries have made it work so we can also emulate them."
This, he said was taken out of context to mean an advice for the current Black Stars Coach, CK Akonnor to adopt.
"I never said CK [Akonnor] should rotate the armband amongst four players.
"At this point, there's stability in the national team and I couldn't have adviced CK to do that.
"What I meant was that, what ever issues we went through in relation to Black Stars captaincy issue, we should learn from it. In other countries, they change captains all the time, but it is not an issue, why is it that when we make such decisions, people have problems.
"I think in future, not now, because there's stability in the team, but in future when we want to choose a captain for the national team, we should get at least three or four players so that we can rotate the armband amongst them.
"The coach and the management can sit down and make decision on which players should be chosen to lead the team," He clarified
Appiah was stripped off the captain armband prior to AFCON '92 in Senegal. The decision many say, affected team unity in the tournament.
Others also claim making Anthony Baffoe the captain for the final against Cote d'ivoire is the reason Ghana failed to win the trophy.
The 2011 Maputo Africa Games winner believes such decisions have caused the country and lessons should be learnt from them.
"Captaincy decisions have caused us a lot and I think we should handle it better in future by selecting three or four players as leaders of the team. When we do that, I don't think we will have any issues in relation to team unity," he noted.
Appiah recently changed the leadership of the Black Stars from Asamoah Gyan to Andre Ayew.
