The Mephibosheth Training Centre in Gomoa, a facility for training children with cerebral palsy, received GH¢26000 worth of functional and mobility devices from the Rotary club of Accra-Teshie Nungua, the lead club of twelve of the Ɔkamafoɔ project.

Among the items are wheelchairs, quad canes, shoulder clutches, and ice cream. The Ɔkamafoɔ project is an initiative by the Rotary Club of Accra-Teshie Nungua, which is in partnership with eleven Rotary clubs. The donation took place on the same day as the school's career day, where students performed acts while dressed in various professions. Rotarian President Seli of Accra-Labone led the service where Rotarians and the children sang along and danced.

Presenting the items, Eyram Hevi, the President of the lead club, the Rotary Club of Accra-Teshie Nungua, said the donation formed part of the club’s determination to support the underprivileged and marginalized in society. “Rotary International is a strong advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the Ɔkamafoɔ project is an example of interventions”. He continued that the donation is a demonstration of their commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of the marginalised and impacting lives of the 80 children of the facility and beyond.

Madam Hannah Jehu-Appiah, who received the items on behalf of the centre lauded the Ɔkamafoɔ initiators and thanked them for their commitment to supporting PLWDs, especially children with cerebral palsy. “As you can see, your kind gesture has brought joy and smiles on their faces, and you are their Santa Claus this yuletide." She added that some of the children have to be carried to the washroom for lack of mobility devices and that the donation will go a long way to support their functionality.

Recently, at the inaugural launch of the Donor Community Forum of October 28, 2023, of which the Ɔkamafoɔ project is a component, and in the presence of key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, a special appeal was made for full coverage of cerebral palsy and mental healthcare and related therapies by the NHIS. This has been responded to promptly. On December 14, 2023, President Nana Akuffo Addo announced that mental health will be absorbed by the NHIS in 2024.

The Ɔkamafoɔ project is a collaboration of 12 Rotary clubs of Accra-Teshies Nungua (lead), West, Labone, Kanda, North Kaneshie, Premier International, and the Rotary clubs of Kumasi, Dunkwa, Obuasi, and the E-Rotary Club of Ghana for advocacy, social engineering and mobilisation.

The project objective is to advocate for and raise awareness about the fundamental human rights of individuals with cerebral palsy and mental health conditions with the United Nation’s Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goal 3 benchmarking. The project also advocates for the inclusion of treatments and physical therapies for cerebral palsy and mental health conditions under the National Health Insurance Scheme

Rotary International is an association of business and professional leaders who strive to promote goodwill, peace, and understanding around the world by performing community service and promoting ethics.
