South Africa Football Federation President, Danny Jordaan has been arrested for alleged fraud and embezzlement totaling 1.3 million Rand ($71k).
The administrator, who is seeking a fourth term as South Africa's Football Federation head, was arraigned before court on Wednesday.
In March, officers from the Hawks - the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations under the Minister of Police, raided Safa's office ostensibly to obtain evidence against the veteran administrator.
It is alleged that between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan used the federation's resources for personal gain.
This included hiring a private security company to protect him, as well as a public relations company - all without the approval of the board.
"South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has been arrested and charged with fraud after allegedly spending R1.3 million of the association's money for his benefit," News24 reported.
"Jordaan and his two co-accused, SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo and journalist-turned-businessman Trevor Neethling, are set to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday."
In a raid lasting five hours, Hawks officers confiscated a laptop, USBs, external hard drives, and yet-to-be-identified documents.
