More than fifteen people are feared dead after a Ford van collided with a KIA Cargo truck at a spot between Bomfa Junction and the Konongo-Odumase stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway.
Many of the dead are said to be passengers on board the Kumasi-Accra commercial van.
The tragedy occurred after owner of a faulty articulated truck left it in a curve without warning signs in the Accra-Kumasi lane of the road.
An eyewitness, Adarkwa Yiadom, told Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah more lives could be lost because of the fatal injuries sustained.
Though the regional Command of the Police Motor Transport Traffic Unit confirmed the accident, it was unable to give further details when contacted.
The Ford vehicle was from Kumasi to Accra and the KIA truck loaded with paint was on its way to Kumasi.
A few meters away from Konongo-Odumase, there was a faulty truck parked on a hill but the KIA truck driver, who was moving at a top speed, refused to slow down and give way to the Ford driver.
In order not to run into the parked truck, the KIA truck veered into the lane of the Ford vehicle resulting in a collision.
All the passengers in the Ford vehicle, including the driver and the mate of the KIA truck, are feared dead.
“Some of them had their legs cut off. It was very hard for rescuers to even bring the drivers out. As I speak to you, they have now been able to bring some of them out,” an eye witness said.
Ambulances from Ejisu and Konongo are said to have rushed to the scene to transport some of the victims to their various hospitals.
