The ruling government has ended its second leg of parliamentary primaries in orphan constituencies with shock defeats to some bigwigs and sweet victories to others. The first leg of the exercise was held in the Northern sector. On Saturday the Southern sector took its turn. In the Greater Accra region and specifically Dome Kwabenya constituency, former Information Minister Zita Okaikwei’s dreams of representing the party in Parliament have been shattered. She polled 83 votes but lost out to relative newcomer Sophia Karen Akuaku who obtained 100 votes. Zita Okaikoi applauded the decision of the delegates and pledged her support for the winner of the elections. Sophia will be contesting against the NPP’s Adwoa Safoa in December 2012. She is confident of victory. The party however postponed primaries in some areas in the region, notably Weija and Tema East and West. In the Central region Agric Minister Kwesi Ahwoi also failed in his bid to obtain enough votes to represent the party in the Agona East constituency. Mr Ahwoi lost by three votes polling 143 votes. Mrs Queenster Pokua Sawyer, the eventual winner polled 146. She would be battling the incumbent NPP MP, Samuel Adjabeng. She told Correspondent Richard Kojo Nyarko her hard work has yielded fruits. Nyarko said the elections went on peacefully. But not all the ministers failed in their bids. In the Eastern region, Deputy Information Minister Baba Jamal will be representing the NDC in Akwatia in next year’s polls. He obtained 336 votes against Nana Kwaku Efisah who obtained 15 votes. Another winner in the region is the Executive Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority who won the bid to contest the Suhum seat. Julius Debrah told Joy News he will capture the seat from incumbent MP Frederick Opare Ansah. Meanwhile Ghana’s ambassador to the Czech Republic Victor Smith has been acclaimed as the party’s Abuakwa North candidate. He was the sole contender for the seat. And while the exercise in the region was generally smooth, there were some areas where confusion broke out, such as Abuakwa South, where an aspirant was heckled when he attempted to feed the delegates. In the Western region the head of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre George Aboagye won the poll in Ahanta West to represent the party.
