General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly chased out of Tamale by angry youth, chanting and cursing the party leaders for  showing little or no concern to five incarcerated members of the party.

The youth, numbering a little over 100, have also warned all the national executives not to step foot in the region to campaign ahead of the party's internal elections.

The action by the youth is in solidarity of the five NPP members, who were incarcerated by a Tamale High Court for murdering another person said to be a supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Yakubu Yahuza was sentenced to death by hanging, with four others, Abibu Dagbana, Majeed Alhassan, Alhassan Sayibu and Imoro Gundaana,  each sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Lawyer for the incarcerated youth had appealed against the sentence.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly referred to as "Sir John" was said to be in Tamale to campaign ahead of the national delegates congress but the youth, who were sitting on motor bikes chased him out.

Speaking to Kojo Asare Baffuor Acheampong on Asempa FM's Ekosii-Sen programme the Tamale Regional Chairman of the NPP,  Alhaji Haruna Tia Sulemana said Sir John was only prevented by the angry youth from speaking but not chased out.

He expressed surprise at the conduct of the youth and appealed to them to exercise restraint as the party continues with the appeal processes.

He said no amount of violence or insult can forcibly grant freedom to the incarcerated persons, insisting, the party is working assiduously to get the people out.

According to him, the party's General Secretary has called a meeting with the leaders of the angry youth in Sunyani to address the grievances.
