Operatives of National Security have mounted an intense search for two individuals suspected to be smuggling uncustomed vehicles into the country.

The unnamed suspects said to be siblings, are also believed to be ringleaders of a gang of smugglers around the borders between Ghana and Togo.

A Myjoyonline source says the two are key suspects in the illegal movement of two vintage Mercedes Benz vehicles into the country said to cost about $3.2 million.

They are alleged to have brought in several vehicles and other items without passing through Custom checkpoints.

The two vehicles; Mercedes Benz 300 SL, (white colour) which costs about $1.8 million and Mercedes Benz 190 SL, black [$1.4 million], did not have the required documentation covering their importation into the country.

A businessman, who purchased the vehicles from Stuttgart in Germany, has claimed an agent contracted to ship the vehicles to Ghana, rather smuggled them into the country through an unapproved route at Ghana’s southern town of Aflao in the Volta Region without his knowledge.

The vehicles were later found in the official residence of the Ketu-South MCE who has denied knowledge of how the vehicle entered the house. He told Joy News he is yet to occupy his official residence because of an ongoing renovation. He said he alerted the police immediately his attention was drawn to the vehicles in the residence.

It has also emerged that the police in the Volta Region is investigating the brothers behind the smuggling, for alleged extortion, Myjoyonline.com gathered.

The MCE said, said the smugglers forced their way into the residence and hid the vehicles which were on a tow truck, despite attempts by his security to stop them.

He told Joy News TV, after receiving the complaint, he then called the Aflao Sector Commander of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and reported the matter following which the vehicles were impounded.
