Social media has been flooded with criticisms from a section of the general public, about the alleged assault on Citi FM's journalist, Caleb Kudah, by National Security operatives.
Following an account by the journalist, of how he was manhandled by officers under the instruction of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Kojo Azugu, many Ghanaians have once again questioned his continued presence at the National Security office in spite of a recommendation by the Emile Short Commission that he should be reassigned. The Commission's recommendation was informed by the violence recorded during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019 under his watch.
Narrating his ordeal, Mr Kudah revealed: "They took me to see Azugu. I showed him my ID card and he said, 'where are you from?' I said Citi FM. 'Who do you know?' I said Richard Mensah and he called AJ. When he called AJ, in my mind, it was going to be sorted.
"They said 'Take a statement', they pushed me, I sat on a chair, they slapped me from the back - the police officers, these are men in Police uniform. I heard names like Osei and Owusu. This is still in the small office of Azugu near the mango tree," he recounted.
For some Ghanaians on social media, the reasons provided by DSP Azugu to the effect that military personnel were masked during the by-election to, "protect their identities and also prevent mosquito bites" and the alleged assault on Caleb Kudah coupled with the aggressive invasion of Accra-based Citi FM, to pick up Zoe Abu-Baidoo, raises eyebrows on his authority as Deputy Superintendent of Police.
They are also asking why the DSP is still at post after the Emile Short Commission recommended that he be reassigned.
"The Commission recommends the immediate removal of DSP Samuel Kojo Azugu from command responsibility at the Ministry of National Security given his failure to appropriately command and control the SWAT team of which he had charge during the operation at the La Bawaleshie school polling station. It is recommended that he be reassigned by the IGP," the Commission stated.
Below are some comments coming in on Twitter:
@MBawumia fix those bullies at the National Security. Especially, the DSP Azugu guy. They're so unprofessional

I wonder who runs the country. DSP Azugu should have been sacked or prosecuted after the Ayawaso mayhem but he's still at post.

It's like the police have rolled back to the era of "Massa say me plus you come". So backward. Sadly the perpetrators of this dastardly act will walk free. To think that these are men Azugu commanded.

3 weeks training given to old phone repairer NPP Double earned him National security job at VVIP lounge at KIA. What do Ghanaians expect from Azugu led National Security? I am surprised many people are surprised about the unprofessional conduct of Azugu’s thugs. #fixthecountrynow

It has now come to the fore that CitiTV's Journalist Caleb Kudah 28, was the subject of gruesome physical assault at the hands of national security operatives in the presence of DSP Azugu and predictably its been crickets from our very own the Nat'l Twitter Police Defense Forces.

When the Commission finished their work of the Ayawaso incident and their recommendation, when did the government? DSP Azugu is still at post and in charge at National Security. Useless country.

After the AWW byelection, Azugu is still with our National security so what professionalism are we expecting from how they do their work? @Sammens @benkoku @Bridget_Otoo@gyaigyimii @Manasseh_Azure @sulemana#FixTheCountry #FixingTheCountryGhana

Per Emile Short Commission White Paper and government response, Azugu shouldn't be in that office. Why is he still at post? pic.twitter.com/wnclQZdLDV
