The Somanya Magistrate Court, presided over by Peter Ametsowu, has convicted 18-year-old Korboe Timothy Padi and four other commercial motorbike operators for multiple traffic offences.
They were found to be riding without a licence, using unregistered motorcycles, and parking in unauthorised areas.
The five were each fined GH¢360 and ordered to register their motorcycles before resuming commercial operations. Failure to comply could result in additional penalties.
Padi and the others were charged on three counts: Regulation 53 of Act 683 (2004), as amended by the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2008 (Act 761) for riding without a licence; Section 41(1) of Act 683, as amended by Act 761, for using unregistered motorcycles; and Regulation 187 of the Road Traffic Act 2012 [L.I. 2180] for illegal parking.
The prosecution, led by Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa, the Somanya District Commander, said the offences occurred on 28 January 2026, around 1930 hours, during a traffic management exercise at the Somanya Roundabout.
He noted that the riders were observed parking in areas not designated for commercial motorbikes, posing a safety risk to other road users.
“Some riders were also operating without licences and on unregistered motorcycles, which compromises road safety and exposes them to legal consequences,” he added.
The police officer emphasised that traffic regulation enforcement will continue across the municipality.
“Our goal is to ensure compliance among commercial motorbike operators and reduce the risk of accidents on our roads,” Superintendent Abrokwa said.
The ruling underscores the importance of complying with traffic laws, ensuring proper motorcycle registration, and parking responsibly.
It serves as a reminder to commercial motorbike riders in Somanya and neighbouring communities to comply with road safety rules to protect themselves and the public.
