The Coalition of Commercial Transport Owners on Monday embarked on a nationwide strike action to protest unfavourable working conditions.
This directive from the Coalition is to compel government to scrap some taxes on fuel such as the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy, Special Petroleum Tax, the Energy Recovery Debt Levy and the Sanitation levy to enable reduction at the pumps.
However, some commercial drivers have disregarded this directive and are on the streets of Accra lending their services to the many commuters stranded.
Commuters are permitted to patronise commercial transport in areas such as Pigfarm, Circle, Bawuleshie, Nungua, among others.
This comes after an issued statement from Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) that the sit-down strike by the commercial transport operators is uncalled for.
The Council argues that this is because the Coalition has been assured of further reductions on fuel prices following a meeting with the Minister for Transport and Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
“Indeed, the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of Government announced the cessation of the collection of road and bridges toll. Though no specific mention was made on the removal of taxes on petroleum products, it is worthy to note that fuel prices have started to decline from as high as ¢6.99 per litre to ¢6.80 per litre and even much lower by some Oil Marketing Companies.
“Following meetings with the Hon. Minister for Transport and the Energy Minister, we have been assured of further reductions,” the Council said in a statement.
According to reports reaching JoyNews, these commercial drivers on the streets are at risk of having their vehicles destroyed.
Meanwhile, commuters have bemoaned the expensive rate for ride-hailing vehicles such as Uber and Bolt. Due to their high demand, prices for these rides have skyrocketed, according to users on social media.

However, a few benevolent citizens are helping some commuters to ease the situation.
