A Spanish fishing vessel with 36 international crew members including four Ghanaians is reported to have lost contact with the shore after issuing distress calls that pirates were attacking it off the coast of Somalia, according to the CNN.
The report citing the ship’s owner, Echebastar Fleet said the incident happened early Friday.
The ship, called Alakrana’s 36 crew members comprise of sixteen Spaniards, eight Indonesians, four Ghanaians, three Senegalese, two Ivorians, two from Madagascar and one from the Seychelles.
This is the first time Ghanaian crew members have been mentioned in the numerous hijackings that occur often in the unsafe waters off the coast of Somalia.
The names of the four Ghanaians are not available.
