Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Evans Bobie Opoku, has told Joy Sports that his outfit will consider making funds available for long jumper Deborah Acquah to treat injuries she sustained while competing for Ghana last year.

The national record holder sustained the injury during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year, where she won bronze.

Acquah, revealed earlier this week that a top Ghanaian official had pledged the nation’s support in catering for the injury, but failed to deliver.

This resulted in her competing with pain in her achilles at the ongoing World Athletics Championships, where she unsurprisingly failed to make the final.

According to the Deputy Sports Minister, his outfit will act swiftly to rectify the situation.

“I met her [Acquah] after I heard the interview because this is a very unfortunate situation,” he said.

“I asked her if it was a written commitment, and she said no. She then went on to tell me that it was the Ghana Olympic Committee President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, who made the promise during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

“According to her, Nunoo Mensah presented the medal to her, and told her he would support her to get treatment.

“However, nothing official came to our notice at the Ministry, up until the interview. We were very surprised.

“But going forward we’re going to see how we can put our heads together to make sure she will be supported.

Acquah will be looking to go one further at the Africa Games in Accra, after claiming silver in Rabat back in 2019.
