The Director of Legal Affairs for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako, has expressed concerns over Speaker Alban Bagbin's recent decisions amid the ongoing stand-off in Parliament.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile programme on Saturday, October 26, Nimako argued that the Speaker should have "hastened slowly" in addressing the contentious issue about the four parliamentary seats.
This disagreement has escalated following Speaker Bagbin's ruling that declared certain seats vacant—a decision that has since been stayed by the Supreme Court, leading to a conflict between the governing party and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The crux of the issue lies in the NDC's assertion of being the majority in Parliament, despite the NPP contesting this claim.
Mr Nimako criticised Bagbin for not taking adequate time to navigate the complexities of the situation before issuing such a ruling.
He emphasised that the implications of declaring seats vacant could have far-reaching effects on parliamentary operations and the democratic process.
As the situation unfolds, the NDC has vowed to disregard the Supreme Court's stay order and continue to operate as the majority, further complicating the dynamics in Parliament.
He asked that all parties involved must approach the matter with a sense of responsibility and urgency to prevent further escalation.
"We are all in this dilemma now because of the Speaker. He should have hastened slowly. In fact, he knew the processes that Afenyo-Markin had filed which was brought to his notice and he even confirmed, that he should have hastened slowly to avoid all these issues that we are having now," he stated.
