The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under HE President Akufo Addo and Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is noted for its demonstrable efforts at bridging the developmental deficit between Ghana’s Zongos and other parts of the country. Yet, the former President John Dramani Mahama with a clouded vision failed to see it. He was reported to have insinuated that projects being undertaken by the NPP in the Zongos are ‘insignificant’. Statements like these by the former President Mahama are, at best, divisive and very consistent with NDC’s ‘them-and-us’ tactics over the years.
At a time that a visionary leader like HE President Akufo-Addo is focused on bringing communities together as evidenced in Dagbon, former President Mahama is doing what he is best at, political opportunism and divisiveness.
It is unfortunate that Mr Mahama regards interventions such as football pitches in the Zongos as ‘insignificant’. This reinforces his ‘incompetence’. His myopia has failed him badly; otherwise, he would have seen that beyond the brilliant AstroTurf pitches, additional educational, cultural and economic projects are being rolled out in the Zongos under the Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF).
Interestingly, this was a man in whom power was vested as the Vice President and the President of this Republic, with clear opportunity to transform the Zongos and settler communities - he did nothing to uplift these communities. That is understandable as he had no vision to come up with any targeted Zongo policy. As before, his Zongo policies are to treat the Zongo people with scorn and disrespect.
Having now only made sense of the term ‘social intervention’ the man who derided the visionary President Akufo-Addo’s Free Senior High School policy wants to be seen as the bastion of education in the Zongos. That is hollow logic, Mr Mahama; you have no plans of addressing Zongo issues. Although Zongos are prime beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy, the NPP government has, under the ZoDF, instituted additional Zongo-focused social intervention measures. At the just ended annual Mawlid of the Prophet (SAW) by National Chief Imam (which the Former President attended), HE the Vice President enumerated current projects being constructed under the ZoDF including provision for potable water and sanitation, educational facilities, and street lighting to improve security. Had the former president stayed a bit longer at the Mawlid he would have been informed of educational projects including a SHS for Ansaaru Deen, JHS at New Fadama owned by the National Chief Imam.
Nasara UK would kindly entreat former President Mahama to stay away from matters he and the NDC have no answers to or no knowledge of. Their record in the Zongos is poor. To incite the Zongos against the rest of the population as former President Mahama and his entourage sought to do was, in all seriousness, unstatesman, unpatriotic and should be condemned. The Zongos are seeing development; the darkness of the night of ignorance under the NDC is giving way to the dawn of hope and progress under the NPP. Never again would the disadvantage in Zongo be used for NDC propaganda.
The Nasara UK would advise Former President Mahama and his cohorts that, until they are able to dream, plan and implement pro-Zongo policies they should desist from discussing Zongos as places they cared about. For, after three decades of support, what Zongos got in return are tokenism and grooming of our youth for NDC’s ill bidding.
We from the Zongos have seen through the smokescreen of Former President John Mahama and the NDC - we say: No; enough of the that!
Signed
.............
Ibrahim Abdul-Mumuni- Secretary Nasara UK
