Women’s groups and child rights activists are rehearsing to stage a demonstration against the Police authorities in Tamale for failing to take action against Constable Emmanuel Atievor who allegedly impregnated two teenage sisters simultaneously.
The women's action follows a recent newspaper publication of a sad story of how the police con¬stable lured the two girls to his room on several occasions and defiled them till they got pregnant.
The leaders of the group said they would call about a thousand women and children to the streets of Tamale to register their abhorrence against child abuse and the attempt by the police authorities to sweep the defilement under the carpet.
Mrs. Bertha Afia Sarhene, one of the organizers disclosed that it is time women and children rose up against the incessant abuse of children by adults. “If the police who are supposed to protest us are treating us this way, then our destiny lies in our own hands”, she noted.
Mrs Agnes Yaa Kumi also a member of the organising group disclosed that this is not the first time that a policeman has defiled a girl.
She said sometime back a police officer who was transferred from Ho to Tamale raped the girl in a bathroom which resulted in pregnancy. The girl who is now 17 had to drop out of school to deliver her baby.
"The defilement of children cannot continue like this", says Miss Benedicta Adjoa Boatemaa, a youth leader who warned that if Emmanuel Atievor is not made to face the law the police authorities will face the music themselves.
A group of journalists in Tamale have also thrown their weight behind the women’s group, promising to push the issue until Atievor is prosecuted.
Even some wives of policemen at the barracks have promised to petition the Regional Minister, the IGP and the Minister of Interior to ensure Atievor faces the law. "We cannot let him go somewhere and do something to some other innocent chil¬dren," a wife of a policeman said.
In an interview, the Public Relation Officer, Inspector Adu Amankwaa, who also doubles as the Station Officer at Sakasaka Police Station, he said the matter is still under investigation and added that Constable Emmanuel Atievor has denied having anything to do with 14 and 15 year old girls who are accusing him of defiling them.
Inspector Adu Amankwaa castigated the media, saying it’s the media that are spicing the whole issue, otherwise, it is a small matter. He however added that if Constable Atievor is found guilty, he would be made to face the law.
Wofa Yaw the father of the children had no choice than to go to a radio station to seek for help. Following his appeal for help, an influential man in Tamale has promised to assist him to have the pregnancies aborted.
Meanwhile at the office of that radio station it was realized that the original medical report had been taken and replaced by a forged one, which was given to the father by a policeman who accompanied him to the hospital. This was an attempt to cover up to conceal the true medical report.
On the fake report, it discovered that the ages of the girls' had been changed to 15 and 16 and other features on their bodies were also changed on the form. When Wofa Yaw went back to the police station and threatened them they released the original one to them.
