Some chiefs in Tanoso in the Tano North district of the Brong Ahafo region are arming themselves to flush out illegal gold miners in the area.
They say they can no longer look on as the galamsey operators pollute the Tano River and damage their farms.
They complain several attempts to stop the miners have failed.
The galamsey operators, they allege, have now armed themselves and are acting with impunity.
Assemblyman for Tanoso, Emmanuel Kum told Joy News they are going all out for the miners.
He was concerned, especially with the traditional belief that when a single fish dies in the Tano River, a human life will be lost, saying, “we cannot wait for one fish to die so that we also will die,” he protested.
“So the people of Tanoso we are going to arm ourselves. Those who have guns, crow bars, machetes, pick axe, shovels, by the end of this week we are going to face the galamsey operators on our land."
He said the regional minister, and the security personnel have failed to act despite countless reports to them.
Efforts by residents, he noted led to the arrest of two of the operators who were later prosecuted and jailed for two years.
But the Brong Ahafo Police Commander DCOP Robert Ayalingo has cautioned the residents against their intentions calling it illegal.
He is urging the residents not to take the law into their own hands but collaborate with the Police to get the galamsey operators out of business.
