Suspended founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby has described as unlawful and unacceptable, actions by some leading members of the party who are projecting Nana Akufo-Addo, the 2012 flagbearer as the obvious choice for the 2016 presidential election.
According to him, those professing faith in Akufo-Addo are only engaging in an act of 'self-preservation’.
Following the declaration by the Supreme Court that President John Dramani Mahama was validly elected during the 2012 Presidential Elections, Nana Akufo-Addo gave the indication that he was going to take a break and seek God's guidance for his political future.
However, some members of the party have since been calling on him to rethink his decision and re-run on the ticket of the party in the 2016 elections.
Speaking on Joy FM, Dr Wereko-Brobby noted that although it was not wrong for people to visit Akufo-Addo and congratulate him for accepting the Supreme Court's verdict in the interest of peace, calls for his re-run were illegal and unconstitutional.
Dr Wereko-Brobby rather advised that the party carried a postmortem on the 2012 elections and figure out the possible reasons for which the party lost the elections.
"Whether we like it or not the party has been declared as having lost polls at the polling station and in the Supreme Court. Any party which loses goes into introspection to find out why it lost and how do you correct the things that went wrong and then you prepare yourself for the battle ahead. And it is in that respect that I find it totally unacceptable that the officers of this party who should be at the forefront of the introspection and also getting the party ready for 2016 are rushing,” he said.
According to him, those trying to tie their labels to that of Nana Akufo-Addo were doing so in their own interest and further cautioned such persons to desist from the act since their current positions in the party were not permanent.
"Their own fortunes they believe depend on tying themselves to Nana's apron string. But all the people running to him now, they should also understand that their own positions are up for grabs. So their professing faith in Nana now is only an act of self-preservation because they will not be in the positions in which they are pontificating now unless their electorates elect them to re-occupy those positions," he noted.
Dr Wereko-Brobby further expressed the desire that Nana Akufo-Addo would announce that he was not interested in running as the flagbearer of the party in 2016 and advised that he traveled out of the country to prevent people from "trooping into his house”.
"Just for the purposes of seeing people crushing down, I wish Nana will announce that he is not going to run and we will see what will happen...If Nana wishes to run, there is a process and I'm sure that he will do very well if he chose to run. I just wish that the right thing will be done”.
If Nana wants to take a break he should leave Ghana so people don't troop into his house, he added.
